MUSIC AND WORSHIP ARTS DIRECTOR
Called by God to Ministry
Qualifications:
- Must have a faith firmly grounded in Jesus Christ
- Undergraduate music degree required
- Degree in sacred music, or equivalent, preferred
- Training/experience in worship arts preferred
- Specific training in choral direction required; experience with leading orchestral instruments preferred
- Strong interest/knowledge/experience in handbells required
- Knowledge/experience with orchestral instrumentalists preferred
- Prior experience leading musical groups or programs (school or church related) required
- Knowledge of church liturgical calendar required
- Understanding of liturgical worship within the Reformed Church tradition, highly desired
- Appreciation of variety in liturgical worship expression required: incorporating drama, dance and other art forms in worship
Skills:
- Musical and vocal ability required
- An ability/willingness to provide opportunities for talents/interests of musicians in the congregation (e.g., jazz guitarists, drummers, etc.)
- An ability to coordinate numerous ongoing musical group schedules simultaneously
- An ability to assess the congregational worship needs and talents
- Strong communication skills and commitment to teamwork, fostering a fun and glad spirit
- Strong organizational skills
- Ability to achieve results through creativity, adaptability and flexibility
Primary Responsibilities as Worship Arts Director:
- Collaborate daily with pastors in planning each week’s worship service (including hymn selections) while simultaneously coordinating across our wealth of volunteers. Attend weekly staff meetings and annual program planning meetings. Coordinate closely with Elder Commissioner for Worship
- Active participant in the life of the church, demonstrating a faith firmly grounded in Christianity
- Select and rehearse worship service musicals and/or dramas/dances
- Coordinate sanctuary decorations and candles for various seasons, i.e., Advent, Christmas, Easter
- Coordinate all performance preparations for children’s and youth choir musicals (sets, props, costumes, etc.)
- Implement and direct special arts programs, i.e., labyrinth, stained glass cross workshop, bulletin covers
- Recruit and schedule congregation members to participate in worship – Good Friday readers, Advent candle lighters, etc.
- Coordinate with ushers regarding special instructions, i.e., lighting for Good Friday and Christmas Eve
- Coordinate special congregational gatherings such as Rally Day and Advent Family Night. Oversee details such as Rally Day theme, outdoor setup and activities
- Determine, develop and cultivate congregational artisan talents and integrate such into church life
- Serve as liaison with Commissioner for Worship and Worship Committee to ensure communion servers and ushers are recruited and scheduled
- Encourage and implement a variety of artistic expressions in worship
Primary Responsibilities as Music Program Director:
- Coordinate with Organist/Sanctuary Choir Director(s) to plan music for services that reflect pastoral themes used in worship
- Oversee Organist/Sanctuary Choir director(s)
- Schedule instrumental music for worship services and occasional special services such as weddings, funerals, etc., including music selection and accompaniment
- Communicate across all media, i.e., Constant Contact, Facebook, videos, etc.
- Maintain church music inventory files
- Maintain church musical instruments
- Manage volunteer assistant music leaders; training/leading volunteer choral and instrumental directors and accompanists
- Develop and administer music budget
- Schedule musical offerings for summer worship services and occasional services in which no choir/ensemble is scheduled
- Participate in professional development experiences such as taking courses, attending conferences, workshops, etc.
Primary Responsibilities as Choral/Handbell Director:
- Schedule ensembles and select musical pieces for each ensemble in conjunction with each director as well as soloists
- Oversee handbell maintenance, I.e., polish and repairs
- Rehearse or oversee rehearsals for all ensembles
- Coordinate worship service participation for all ensembles
- Meet with volunteer directors as needed to encourage and assist in planning
- Schedule vocal soloists in worship or within larger compositions
- Write and arrange music as needed
- Prepare and take musical groups to sing/ring/perform in the community
- Oversee annual handbell concert; select music, coordinate logistics, publicity, etc.
Primary Responsibilities as Supervisor, Digital/Technical Coordinator:
- Input music into Finale software as required for projection and various events
- Report music used in online worship to One License to ensure copyright compliance
- Stay abreast of online ministry trends
- Oversee Digital Coordinator, tech volunteers and coordinate maintenance of equipment and need for new equipment, i.e., microphones, live-streaming needs
